Scotland Yard told to hurry Menezes safety control systems

12 April 2012

Scotland Yard has been told to complete work on systems designed to prevent another Stockwell tragedy as a matter of urgency.

A report says the Met must finalise a range of initiatives if Londoners are to be reassured that it is "highly unlikely" another innocent person will be killed mistakenly by police marksmen.

The study comes before the fourth anniversary of the shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes at Stockwell Tube station in July 2005.

The 27-year-old electrician was shot by a firearms team who mistook him for a suicide bomber.

The killing led to an Old Bailey trial where the Met was found guilty over the shooting for breaches of health and safety laws.

The report by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary says the Met has made some progress.
