Security tags for memorials

War memorials will be given invisible security markings after a spate of thefts of plaques taken for scrap metal.

Sutton council took action after plaques were torn from Carshalton War Memorial. Now the remaining memorials in the borough are being forensically marked with SmartWater, a liquid which can only be seen under UV light. Metal recovered before it is melted down can be identified and returned. A memorial in Manor Park, Sutton, was marked yesterday.
