Simón Bolívar returns as star of Southbank's new season

Keynote: the orchestra, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel
12 April 2012

They attracted more than 60,000 visitors in one week during their last visit to the Southbank Centre.

Today it was announced the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra from Venezuela will return in what will be the highlight of the centre's classical season for 2011/12.

The orchestra, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, last visited in 2009 when they earned rave reviews and even had thousands watching their rehearsals.

The musicians are products of the publicly funded scheme called El Sistema, established in Venezuela in 1975. It takes some of the poorest and most socially deprived children and gives them a means of escape through music. They will return in June next year.

Other highlights of the season, which was unveiled today, include Vladimir Jurowski and the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Sir Simon Rattle conducting the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and Daniel Barenboim's The Bruckner Project.
