Six cats poisoned by 'antifreeze killer'

12 April 2012

A cat poisoner could be on the loose in Basildon after six cats died from drinking antifreeze.

Vets cannot be sure the animals were poisoned on purpose, but are urging owners to take extra care.
Cats love the sweet taste of antifreeze, but it crystallises in their liver causing renal failure.

Just a teaspoon of the liquid, used in car radiators and screen wash, can be fatal. The cats were taken to Cherrydown Vets in Cherrydown West, Basildon. Nicola Humphreys, 36, was left heartbroken after losing her cats Bo and Tye last week.

Miss Humphreys, who also has a Labrador and another kitten, said: "I can't point the finger, but there is something suspicious about all these incidents. I am devastated.

"I have another kitten but I'm not going to let her outside. You can't trust anyone."

Miss Humphreys claims that two other cats have gone missing from her road, and another was found dead in a neighbour's garden.

Owners are advised to seek urgent medical help should their pet exhibit signs of poisoning, as survival rates are poor.

Symptoms include stumbling, vomiting, excessive urination and lack of appetite. Shawn Plunkett of Cherrydown Vets said: "You should clear spills and ensure your pet does not drink from puddles or get in your garage. Anyone who thinks their pet may be poisoned should get them to us as quickly as they can."
