Six hurt in Taliban attack on military convoy near US base

The Taliban claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing today near a US base on the outskirts of Kabul that left at least six people wounded.

Nato said the attack this morning at Camp Phoenix, a logistics support base for US forces, injured at least three Afghan civilians and three foreign soldiers. No Nato personnel were killed.

Afghan officials said a bomber in a white car targeted a convoy on its way to the base. Reports say the blast was followed by small arms fire. The area was sealed off by Western and Afghan forces.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid told Associated Press that the attack was carried out by a bomber targeting an international military convoy.

Nabi, a taxi driver at the scene, said: "Everything went dark. I just managed to take myself out of the area."

He added: "I don't know what happened then, but the attack was on the foreigners."

Nato spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Todd Vician said the bombing "injured the people of Afghanistan and our personnel who are partnering Afghan security forces to bring better development, governance and security".
