Smiths lands jet fighter deal

13 April 2012

AVIONICS giant Smiths Group has landed a key $500m (£300m) contract for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter programme.

The fighter will be most important military aircraft for the US and British armed forces.

Smiths said on Monday its specialist Interconnect electronics engineering division had been chosen by JSF main contractor Lockheed Martin to supply high performance cabling to handle high speed data at extremes of temperature and pressure. It will start delivery next year and the multirole fighter will go into production in 2006. The contract lasts until 2026.

The US Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps as well as the Royal Navy and RAF are due to take more than 2,500 F-35s. Worldwide, a further 3,000 sales are expected.

JSF programme manager Tom Burbage said the contract augured well for further close association with Smiths.
