'Snow socks' help speed capital's ambulances

The tyres of ambulances and emergency response cars are being fitted with special "snow socks", or fabric snow chains, so that crews can respond faster in the severe weather.

London Ambulance Service also revealed today that it was using 4x4 vehicles to ferry paramedics to work from parts of the capital badly affected by the weather. Pick-up points have been set up in areas such as Romford and Croydon under the service's adverse weather response plan.

An LAS spokesman also urged people only to call 999 in real emergencies. He added: "We do know staff will have made every effort to get into work. The call rate is starting to increase as would be expected."
