Snubbed Green is hero for Hammers

Robert Green may have enhanced his reputation as the most consistent English goalkeeper in the Premier League so far this season with another match-winning save but is still not holding his breath for an international call-up.

England's next match is a friendly against Austria in Vienna next month and West Ham fans will tell you it will be a travesty if Green isn't in Steve McClaren's squad.

The man himself, though, was today fatalistic about his England chances even after a second-half save which West Ham manager Alan Curbishley and his Sunderland counterpart Roy Keane believed was the turning point of the game.

The score was 1-1 and West Ham were looking fragile when, in the 57th minute, Kenwyne Jones won a high ball and flicked on for Grant Leadbitter to hit a shot which looked certain to find the net. Somehow Green stretched to fingertip the ball onto an upright and the ball was cleared.

"That was a match-winning save from Rob and that sums up how he's been so far this season," said Curbishley. Keane said: "It was a fantastic save."

Green said: "Their player wouldn't have wanted to strike it any cleaner. It nearly took a couple of my fingers off in the process but it was a reaction save, the sort of thing you train for." With England No1 Paul Robinson blamed for Russia's second goal in last week's 2-1 defeat, many West Ham fans believe Green should get a chance. However, the goalkeeper said: "I'm not worried about it. They're going to pick whoever they want and if I keep playing well, one day it might come. It's beyond my control. I've not been told why I'm not in the squad."

Carlton Cole headed home but Jones headed the equaliser. Nolberto Solano's shot came back off an upright to hit goalkeeper Craig Gordon's legs before ending in the net and Craig Bellamy added a third.
