South-East still stoking house prices

FRESH evidence that London and the South-East is fuelling a renewed burst of activity in the housing market has emerged.

The fledgling Financial Times house price index showed property prices nationwide leapt by 1.9% in October - the largest one month increase since March - compared with 1.2% in September.

According to the index, calculated for the FT by consultancy Acadametrics, the annual rate of increase surged last month from 2.9% to 7.8%.

The survey chimes with recent reports from mortgage lenders Halifax and Nationwide.
