Spanish resort bans bikinis from streets

Bo Wilson12 April 2012

British tourists at a popular Spanish holiday resort have been warned not to bare their flesh in the town.

Authorities in Salou on the Costa Dorada, south of Barcelona, passed a series of by-laws banning people from walking around in bikinis or with shirts off unless on the beach.

The laws will also see anyone having sex on the beach or drinking in the streets handed a fine of up to £245.

It is part of a clampdown on anti-social behaviour following complaints from locals earlier this year about the drunken behaviour of British students for "Saloufest" — an annual party organised by university sports clubs at Easter.

It is the first place in Spain to implement a law banning beachwear.
