Spotify launches software to rival iTunes

12 April 2012

Free music service Spotify today sparked an online war with Apple by allowing people to organise their own music collection via its software.

Spotify has proved hugely successful by allowing people to listen to free music in return for hearing ads between songs. However, until today it has left users to rely on Apple's iTunes software to organise any music downloaded.

"You can now use Spotify as your primary music source — and only music source," said Daniel Ek, Spotify's founder.

The new software, which is free to download, also lets people share music via Facebook.

"This will be a real wake-up call for Apple," said Stuart Dredge of website Music Ally.

"For consumers, it will make life a lot easier. Facebook integration is also a big step forward, as you'll be able to see what your friends are listening to, and share songs you like."

Spotify, which has 29 employees, recently moved its headquarters to London. It also has a Spotify app for the iPhone.
