American film star Christian Slater narrowly avoided being stabbed after a West End performance.

The actor was leaving a Shaftesbury Avenue theatre in London after performing in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest on Friday night when a man attempted to stab him.

The actor's bodyguard took the brunt of the attack, the Metropolitan Police said.

A police spokeswoman said: "Police were called at approximately 11pm on Friday to Shaftesbury Avenue, W1, to reports of an attempted stabbing.

"A 44-year-old man was attacked by a knife which luckily did not penetrate his skin, only his clothing."

The spokeswoman said police were continuing to investigate the incident but had not made any arrests.

A witness told the Daily Telegraph: "We saw a scuffle but thought nothing of it at first, as loads of people were trying to get his autograph.

"It was only when a bodyguard began to shout that we realised something was wrong. He suddenly moved in front of Christian Slater and it all got a bit frantic. Afterwards, they all looked shaken but OK.
