Starbucks plans Russian offensive

13 April 2012

STARBUCKS wants to open a Russian front as the coffee giant pushes on with its international expansion.

'We are especially interested in Eastern Europe right now. We think there are great opportunities for us in that area. We are very, very interested in Russia at this point,' chief executive Orin Smith said as he showcased strong second-quarter figures.

Russia has close to 150m citizens but international-coffee chains have so far opted not to make any inroads in the former Communist State.

Russian media reports have said that Starbucks is preparing a $50m (£28.3m) opening offensive.

In the three months to 28 March, Starbucks' net profit rose 53% to $79m. Its international arm, which accounts for 2,200 stores of the company total of 7,800, turned profitable in the period, earning $8.4m.
