A student who secretly filmed women taking baths and showers in his hall of residence was spared jail today.

Charles Greaves, 19, hid a tiny digital video camera inside a shower gel bottle which he placed in the mixed bathroom of his hall at the University of Wales in Bangor.

He pleaded guilty last month at Caernarfon Magistrates' Court to three counts of voyeurism and three counts of installing equipment for the purpose of voyeurism.

He was sentenced at Caernarfon Crown Court today to nine months in a young offenders' institution for each count, to run concurrently, but Judge Merfyn Hughes suspended the sentence for two years.

Greaves breathed a sigh of relief in the dock when the sentence was suspended and his parents burst into tears.
