Supersonic proposal at 60,000ft

Internet worker Rupert Pilgrim chose his moment at 60,000 feet to pop the question to girlfriend Catherine Murray on Concorde's final day in service.

He proposed to her as the flight from Edinburgh was high over the North Sea.

When the aircraft hit top speed of more than 1,300mph, the 35-year-old decided it was time to act as he made the last in-flight marriage offer in the aircraft's history.

There was no room to get down on bended knee due to the tray of poached salmon and champagne on their laps, but his question still met with a 'yes'.

The high-flying couple from Amersham, Buckinghamshire, have been together for four years and have a daughter of 22 months.

After the flight a jubilant Mr Pilgrim spoke to reporters about his supersonic proposal.

"I waited until Concorde was at Mach II and at its highest speed.

"When people were taking pictures, that gave me a good excuse to go up and mention to the stewards that we might want to get some champagne down."

Ms Murray, 39, said she had no idea of the surprise proposal.

"If I'd been a man perhaps I would have thought of a similar thing," she said afterwards. "He chose a good moment."

She said the experience was wonderful.

The couple had been among the competition winners lucky enough to travel on Concorde on its last day in service.

"I'm very envious of the people who can afford to fly Concorde all the time. It was so special," she said.

Mr Pilgrim said: "It was a sad and happy day for us. Concorde is an icon and we couldn't have picked a better way to travel."

The newly betrothed pair boarded an express service to their home later to tell
their friends and family their news.
