Surveyor 'given £1m in mortgage scam'

12 April 2012

A Met policeman and his chartered surveyor wife accepted more than £1 million in cash and luxury cars after she gave inflated valuations for homes in London's most exclusive neighbourhoods, the Old Bailey heard.

The valuations led to the Bank of Scotland paying out £10 million in mortgage offers on five homes, including a £3.5 million house in Chelsea's Cheyne Walk and a mews house in Belgravia.

Mary-Jane Rathie, 43, is on trial for fraud, while both she and her husband David, 47, a traffic officer, are accused of concealing criminal property.

The scam's mastermind, who used the name Joanne Pier, has since disappeared, the court was told. The trial continues.
