The Duchess:

Lundum's: London's only Danish restaurant is famous even in Copenhagen for the quality of its traditional food, especially marinated herring washed down with Akvavit - a type of Schnapps. The family-run restaurant also serves "smorrebrod" (open sandwiches with cold fish, meats and pickles) and "spraengt and" (cured, roasted duck served with horseradish sauce).

Danish pastries: Inspiration for the Danish pastry, enjoyed with a cup of coffee by thousands of City workers every day, came from Viennese bakers who began working in Denmark in the 1900s.

Bacon & beer: Last year, Britons ate 301 tonnes of Danish bacon and pork, with about 30 per cent of consumption during breakfast. There are twice as many pigs as people in Denmark. Total consumption of Carlsberg in the UK is more than 1.2 billion gallons a year. Carlsberg Special Brew was first produced in 1950 to celebrate the visit of Winston Churchill to Copenhagen.

Denmark Street: Denmark Street, Soho, was named in about 1683 when the then young Princess Anne married Prince George of Denmark. She later became queen and bore him 17 children.

Music publishers set up shop along the street in the 1800s, and low rents in the Twenties earned it the nickname Tin Pan Alley. Recording studios in the Sixties saw artists such as Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Kinks and Jimi Hendrix working there.

Herrings: Pickled herring - in an endless variety of flavourings - is the national dish of Denmark. More than 300,000 tonnes of the fish are caught in Danish seas every year - making it the biggest single species caught in Denmark - and much of that is exported to the UK. The best herring are said to be from the island of Bornholm, to the east of the mainland, where freshly-caught red herrings are smoked over alder wood.
