The great Jubilee getaway

Victoria Fletcher12 April 2012

A million more people will fly out of Britain this weekend than did during last year's bank holiday because they want to get away from the World Cup and Golden Jubilee celebrations.

Airlines, which have seen passenger numbers slashed since 11 September, have reported a jump in sales as Britons take advantage of Tuesday's extra day off to head abroad.

Thomas Cook said it had seen a 10 per cent increase in holiday bookings compared to the same time last year. A spokesman said the company was witnessing a late surge in people desperate to get away. He said: "There has been a sudden and rather late rush on trips. I think that people have realised it is an opportunity they cannot miss - especially considering it coincides with half term."

Popular destinations include Spain, Greece and Turkey.

British Airways said its sales had jumped and it will carry more than 140,000 people this weekend. Meanwhile Ryanair said it was enjoying a 35 per cent rise in passengers from 2001.

Easyjet said it had almost sold out of seats although it did have one or two deals left over.

However, those seeking last-minute cheap deals may be disappointed. The strong demand and last-minute timing mean that prices on some airlines have now soared. Return BA flights to Rome leaving on Friday lunchtime and returning on Tuesday evening are selling for £557.
