The Mini is reborn as an electric scooter for Mods

New model: Agyness Deyn and the Mini E — an experimental electric version of the classic car

It was made famous by Michael Caine in the Italian Job and is one of Britain's most recognisable cars.

However, BMW today announced plans to recreate the mini — as an electric scooter.

At the 100% Design show at London Design Festival, the car giant unveiled three prototype scooters, including one, modelled by Agyness Deyn, which has been given a Mod makeover to appeal to scooter enthusiasts.

"We are looking at the future of mobility, and on the car side we are looking at electric," said Adrian van Hooydonk of BMW, which owns Mini.

"As we have produced two-wheeled vehicles for a long time, it was an obvious step to create a scooter.

"We realised this was a great urban concept, because with two wheels you can get further into the city, and park easily."

The firm said it had made no decisions on when the scooter would go into production. "This is a concept, a vision, we want to gauge the public's reaction and see if there is a desire for it," said Mr Hooydonk.

"We are looking at a lot of options, including a removable battery for people without a garage."

The scooters have customisable body panels, and their charging times and performance are expected to be comparable with existing scooters.
