The moves Britain will be watching

While his message of change has gained most of the headlines, it will be Barack Obama's detailed policies that affect Britain most directly. From America's massive overseas military presence to its role in bringing the world out of recession, an Obama White House will be watched keenly by Downing Street.

Iraq: Mr Obama proposes a timetabled withdrawal. One to two brigades a month would be pulled out, removing nearly all US troops by summer 2010. Like Britain, he would leave residual forces to perform specific missions. Should make it politically much easier for Gordon Brown to withdraw nearly all British forces.

Afghanistan: He wants to send at least two additional brigades and will seek greater contributions from Nato allies. Proposes an additional $1 billion in non-military assistance each year. Mr Obama has also stated that he would engage terrorist targets along the Afghan-Pakistani border with or without Pakistan's assistance,or approval. The extra forces will be welcomed by Britain, but the extra cash for "hearts and minds" will appeal just as much to Downing Street.

Iran: Mr Obama shocked many when he said he could meet Iranian leaders for talks without preconditions. However, he supports air strikes as a last resort to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. Mr Brown will welcome support for the UN. He may find air strikes too much.

Other foreign policy: On Russia, Mr Obama has adopted the British line that Moscow should not be kicked out of the G8 over Georgia.

Financial crisis: Mr Obama backed the $700 billion plan to buy toxic debt, as well as a version of Mr Brown's recapitalisation of banks. His plan to raise taxes for those earning over $250,000 a year would never get off the ground here.
