Thomas steams into Argentina

James McLean12 April 2012

THOMAS the Tank Engine is preparing for his first journey into South America. Owner, Gullane Entertainment, has signed with Discovery Latin America to broadcast the character's adventures in Spanish and Portuguese.

Thomas's trip to Tierra del Fuego in Patagonia, Argentina, was revealed as part of a package of new contracts. Gullane has also sold rights to broadcast the existing 130 Thomas episodes and 78 new ones to children's cable channel Nickelodeon in Britain. The first 26 new episodes should be completed by the autumn. The group said 85% of production costs had been covered by pre-sales.

Gullane also unveiled its first Guinness World Records programming sale after buying the rights from Diageo for £46m last July. It said the deals were worth £3m over two years.
