Thousands flock to see 'Gherkin'

London's iconic new building the "erotic gherkin" proved a smash hit when it opened its doors to the public for the first time this weekend.

Long queues formed from 7am on Saturday outside the curved glass building in the City, officially known as 30 St Mary Axe and designed by Foster and Partners. Visitors were taking advantage of the London Open House weekend, which gives free access once a year to government and privately-owned buildings in the capital. An estimated 3,000 people had to be turned away.
