A string of protests was launched across London today in preparation for tomorrow's mass demonstration.

University students targeted commuters, MPs and schoolchildren in a bid to drum up support for tomorrow's "Shut Down London" event and lobbying of parliament.

Hundreds of King's College students invaded the Tube dressed as lions, monkeys and Father Christmas to petition commuters, some carrying placards saying: "Nick Clegg stop lion to us."

Hundreds also turned up for free "flash mob" style lectures at St Pancras station and the British Museum, run by lecturers from the School of Oriental and African Studies.

Protesters from the NUS women's campaign gathered outside Lib-Dem equalities minister Lynne Featherstone's Wood Green office, while lecturers and students marched through Bloomsbury at lunchtime.

There were also expected to be occupations at SOAS, UCL, King's College, Goldsmiths and London Met, before tomorrow's day of action.

Student Bernard Goyer from SOAS said: "The Government wants to charge for education, and we are today giving it to the public for free we are not smashing things but going into public spaces and educating people.

Michael Chessum, from the National Campaign Against Fees and Cuts, said no single group was in charge of today's protests. He added: "There will be impromptu demos."
