Thousands to join Smiley Culture 'justice' march

Questions: Smiley Culture died during police raid
12 April 2012

Thousands of people demanding "justice" over the death of reggae star Smiley Culture are set to march through London tomorrow.

The group, walking from South London to Scotland Yard via Parliament Square, say it will be "the largest black community-led demonstration in years".

Organisers said they are marching for all people who have died in police custody as well as Smiley Culture, real name David Emmanuel. He died of a single stab wound to the heart in the kitchen of his home in Warlingham on March 15.

An inquest into his death was told he stabbed himself as the Met Police were executing a search warrant.

Emmanuel, 48, who briefly found fame in the Eighties as a reggae singer and DJ, was on bail for conspiracy to supply cocaine and was also under investigation for a separate plot allegedly involving drug mules bringing cocaine to Britain.

His death is being investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Tomorrow's event is being organised by friends and family of the singer who have questioned the circumstances of his death.
