Ticket chaos for Christmas

Passengers face rail chaos over the holiday period,

Some cheap return tickets are impossible to book because the timetable has not been worked out.

It is only possible to book seat reservations up to Christmas Eve on many routes serving the capital - but without confirmed bookings of return times many cheap advance tickets are not available.

Network Rail said it was not able to give long advance notice of timetable arrangements because it does not know which tracks will be available.

It blames this on the huge increase in maintenance work needed.
