Tiger Woods may have fled to Africa to escape the publicity surrounding his infidelity, it emerged today.

Celebrity website TMZ claimed that the golf star told frends he wanted to go on safari immediately after the scandal broke.

A source told the gossip website he wanted to "go to a friend's estate in Africa and completely disappear from public view."

The developments came as this dramatic picture of the fallen star, taken by celebrated photographer Annie Leibovitz, was released by Vanity Fair ahead of its publication later this month.

The photograph was taken just before the scandal around his affairs broke at the end of November.

Meanwhile, Tiger's wife Elin was today spotted playing with the couple's children in Florida following a vacation in the French Alps.

Tiger announced in December he was to step away from golf in an attempt to try to repair his marriage after he was linked to 14 different women.
