THE LORD MAYOR'S SHOW

It begins at Mansion House at 10.55am and heads to the Royal Courts Of Justice for 12.35pm. Then the return journey kicks off at 1pm from Victoria Embankment, and returns to Mansion House. The whole thing is rounded off by a spectacular firework display at 5pm above the City which is well worth the effort alone.

SOHO WRITERS' FESTIVAL FAMILY DAY There's a family feast of performances, workshops and activities in Soho this weekend, as part of the annual writers' festival. Renowned children's theatre the Polka will be previewing their Christmas shows The Selfish Giant and Stuart Little, Tall Stories will stage Something Else (which went down a storm in Edinburgh), there are fun and informal storytelling workshops aimed at motivating kids, and much more. The finale is a performance of Dr Bunhead's Exploding Kitchen at 2pm.

BROADGATE ICE The ice rink at the Broadgate Centre in the City reopens this weekend, and it's a wonderful chance to enjoy a stylish openair skate in the heart of the Square Mile. There's a good selection of sandwich bars and restaurants in the area too. From Monday to Wednesday, you can also go and watch a game of broomball, which is lots of slippery, sliding fun.

CHELSEA WORLD OF SPORT Don't let the wintry weather put the mockers on the kids' sporting activities. This place is a hi-tech heaven for sports buffs, with more than 30 sporting exhibits.

There's tennis, volleyball, climbing, football and interactive coaches on hand to help hone children's skills. They also host kids' parties if you're looking for a new and interesting venue.
