Tory leader gagged over euro

IAIN Duncan Smith is being urged to say little in the coming battle to save the pound. The Tory leader's advisers have told him to keep a low profile in the run-up to the expected referendum on whether Britain should sign up to the euro.

They say the Conservatives are still so unpopular that a banner waving offensive would do more harm than good.

Mr Duncan Smith has gone to some lengths to push Europe down the Tory agenda. He and his advisers appear to accept that the Tories have come to be seen as a one-issue party obsessed with the EU. Despite that, any move to take a back seat in the contest risks outrage from the party's Right wing.

The Tory leader's director of strategy, Dominic Cummings, told today's Independent, however, the biggest potential threat to the pound's survival is the Conservative Party. 'For many people, just about the only thing less popular than the euro is the Tory Party.'
