Pressure: Business chiefs say Philip Hammond should lift the ban on airport expansion

Airports in the South-East may be allowed to expand after 2015, the Standard can reveal today.

The Government has ruled out a third runway at Heathrow and expansion at Stansted or Gatwick this parliament. But business chiefs are piling pressure on Transport Secretary Philip Hammond to end the moratorium.

The Cabinet minister will publish a paper which will explore how the industry can pave the way for expansion by cutting its carbon emissions and noise levels. Mr Hammond said: "Aviation has a vital role to play in supporting UK growth."
