Trial drinking ban in run-up to 2012

The borough of Newham could become a controlled drinking zone under plans to reduce alcohol-related violence in time for the 2012 Olympics.

The move would mean police could confiscate alcohol from anyone causing a nuisance.

The ban will be tried out in Stratford town centre and Forest Gate initially.

The order is in consultation until 28January. Newham council said "sensible drinking" will be allowed.
