Two lead field in race at Barclays

BANKING giant Barclays should name its new chief executive next month. Bob Diamond, head of the Barclays Capital investment banking arm, and finance director John Varley are the two top candidates to succeed Matt Barrett who has been boss since 1999.

Barrett has still to decide whether he wants to succeed Sir Peter Middleton - who retires next year - as chairman.

Barclays denies that Diamond will leave the bank if he misses out on the chief executive job.
