13 April 2012

Two men are appearing in court today charged in connection with an anti-terror operation targeting an alleged network of terrorist recruiters, Scotland Yard said.

The men were charged last night after being held following a series of raids across London overnight on September 1, including at a Chinese restaurant in the Borough area of the city. The operation has also involved anti-terror officers searching an Islamic school in East Sussex.

Mohamed Hamid, 48, of Clapton, east London faces 12 charges - including six of soliciting murder and one of providing terror training.

Kibley Da Costa, 23, of West Norwood, south London, faces three charges, one of providing terror training and two of receiving terror training.

Both men are set to appear at City of Westminster Magistrates' Court this morning. Hamid is charged with soliciting murder of person or persons who do not "implement Allah's law", at a meeting between March 31 and April 1 this year, and soliciting murder of person or persons who do not believe in the Islamic faith, at a meeting between April 21 and 22.

He faces similar charges relating to British or US citizens at a meeting on June 3, and relating to person or persons who do not believe in the Islamic faith, at a meeting on June 15.

The other two charges of soliciting murder relate to person or persons who do not implement Sharia law, at a meeting on July 14, and person or persons who are not of the Islamic faith, on July 22.

He also faces four charges of publishing a statement intended to encourage members of the public to commit terrorist acts, between April 21 and 22, on June 3, on June 15 and July 14. He is also accused of providing firearms training contrary to the Terrorism Act 2000, between May 1 2004 and March 19 2006, and providing terror training, contrary to the Terrorism Act 2006, between April 13 and June 19.

Da Costa is charged with providing terror training contrary to the Terrorism Act 2006, between April 28 and May 1 2006, and receiving terror training at a woodland area near Matley Wood Caravan and Camping site, Beaulieu Road, Lyndhurst, Hampshire between June 2 and June 4, and receiving terror training near Pondwood Farm, White Waltham, Berkshire on June 18.
