US warns of Christmas terror

12 April 2012

American has again been placed on high security alert with a warning that al Qaeda terrorist cells could be preparing to strike before Christmas.

Calling on Americans to "be vigilant", security chief Tom Ridge said that intelligence agencies had monitored threats from Osama bin Laden's terror group talking about " something big" timed to coincide with the end of Ramadan in the middle of the month and what he called "important religious observations of other faiths", including Christmas and the Jewish festival of Hanukkah.

The alert is the third since the attacks of 11 September and, like the others, does not mention specific targets. An FBI threat advisory has been issued to 18,000 law enforcement agencies across the US.
