Vandals hit Marble Arch fountains

12 April 2012

The fountains at Marble Arch have been vandalised weeks after a £2.1million makeover.

The 181-year-old monument's fountains were working for the first time in a decade and were illuminated in red, white and blue.

But litter has been stuffed down the jets, meaning engineers have had to be called to repair them next week.

Robert Davis, Westminster council's deputy leader, said: "The restoration of the Marble Arch fountains has been very popular and we will not allow this mindless act of vandalism to ruin this iconic site for local residents and visitors. Repairs are being carried out as a priority."
