War veteran murder ‘witness’ to fly home

Doorstep death: Geoff Bacon
12 April 2012

A witness who could hold vital information about the murder of a 90-year-old war veteran will return to Britain next week, police said today.

The 66-year-old disabled woman, who may have been attacked by the same man who left Geoffrey Bacon for dead at his home in Camberwell, is on holiday in Bosnia.

Mr Bacon was too ill to give police a description of his attacker before he died in hospital 11 weeks after he was robbed and beaten.

The woman postponed her anticipated return last week and detectives had been considering whether to fly to the Balkans in the hope of getting her to construct an e-fit image of the man.

A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said today: "We have now made contact with the woman and have been assured she is going to be back next week, when we can interview her properly to see if she can provide us with an e-fit. If by any chance she does not return, the option of course remains for us to fly out there."
