'Wasteful' London council installs £1,000 speed hump in a cul-de-sac

"Ridiculous": the speed hump
Miranda Bryant12 April 2012

A London council was today accused of wasting taxpayers' money after installing a £1,000 speed hump in a 90-metre cul-de-sac.

Southwark council says it is required by law to put the speed-calming measure on any road measuring more than 80 metres (262 feet) within a 20mph zone.

But residents said the move was "ridiculous" because there are no problems with speeding.

They also claimed the speed hump in Monclar Road would reduce the number of parking spaces.

Labour councillor Peter John said there were two other cul-de-sacs in the area that also had unnecessary speed humps.

Councillor Paul Kyriacou, executive member for transport and environment at the council, said all residents and businesses within the vicinity of the zone had been consulted, adding that speed-calming measures saved lives.
