Weekend betting bonanza

Sarah Hills|Metro13 April 2012

If you've got a fiver to spare and fancy your chances at scooping a windfall this weekend, take your pick.

A £1.50 lottery ticket will enter you into the EuroMillions draw where the jackpot has just reached a record £43million.

But for those who think the 76million-to-one odds of winning are too high, a flutter on the US golf Masters, the Grand National, the General Electionor even the royal wedding might be a better bet.

William Hill has opened a book on catastrophes that could ruin the big day for Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles tomorrow.

The odds include 25/1 that Prince William will lose the ring, 33/1 that Camilla changes her mind and fails to turn up and 40/1 that Charles does the same. The bookmakers have also offered 100/1 that the Queen issues a last-minute ultimatum threatening to disinherit Charles if it goes ahead.

Nearly half of Britain's adults are likely to bet on the Grand National tomorrow and, with an average stake of £8, a record turnover of £ 250million is expected.

Meanwhile, the main Lotto draw tomorrow has an estimated jackpot of £9million and the Lotto Extra draw has an estimated jackpot of £8.2million.

In golf, British player Luke Donald has emerged as the heaviest backed contender from 80/1 to 33/1 to win the US Masters, which started yesterday.

William Hill is also expecting £10million to be staked on the general election. Labour is 1/9 favourite to win with an overall majority.
