West Bank clash kills 8

At least seven Palestinians and an Israeli soldier died today in an upsurge of violence in the West Bank, threatening the latest "land-for-peace" initiative.

Palestinian security sources said five of the dead were policemen killed in night raids by Israeli special forces on two positions near Jenin.

They said a Palestinian gunmen was also killed and 15 hurt in fighting with Israeli troops at the Balata refugee camp. The Israeli army said one of its soldiers died in the clash.
