White House takes £174m off military for Afghanistan

The White House is shifting $290 million (£174 million) from the military to reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan.

The money was initially earmarked for the Defense Department but President George Bush told Congress it would be redirected to the State Department to "accelerate a variety of initiatives already underway in Afghanistan".

Mr Bush has asked Congress for an additional £720 million for Afghanistan's reconstruction.
