A female pensioner was injured when shots were fired through the window of a house in east London last night.

Gang detectives are investigating the shooting in the Market Street area of East Ham, which happened shortly after 9pm on Thursday.

Scotland Yard said enquiries were at an early stage but there was nothing to suggest the woman, in her 70s, had been targeted.

The force said officers were called at 9.15pm last night.

"A woman aged in her 70s sustained injuries to her arm," said a statement.

"She was taken to hospital by ambulance and has since been discharged.

"Officers from Trident are investigating.

"There has been no arrest at this early stage. Enquiries are ongoing."

Anyone with information is asked to call police on the non-emergency number 101.
