Woolworths take on travel firms with 'pic 'n' mix' holiday packages

13 April 2012

Woolworths is taking on travel agents and websites such as lastminute.com by entering the holiday market.

The retailer more familiar for budget household goods, toys and its pic 'n' mix sweets counter is marketing flights, hotel rooms and other travel deals both online and in its 821 stores.

The move follows a successful first six months of selling cars via its website. It also recently started to offer an online flower delivery service.

By going live with www.woolworths.co.uk/travel, run in partnership with travel specialist PPA Group, the firm hopes to pick up business online that it may lose in stores.

Woolies hopes its reputation for cheap prices will attract customers to the travel deals, which include a three-day city break to New York, including flights, for less than £500 and a £241 return flight to Dubai.

Marketing director Stephen Robertson said: "The online travel market is booming.

"People didn't expect Woolworths to sell new cars, but the car site has been a huge success and encouraged us to move i nto the trave l market."

Woolworths claims its website attracts three million visitors a month and is the UK's sixth-biggest online retailer.
