Youngest prisoner in Guantanamo admits war killing

12 April 2012

The youngest inmate at Guantanamo Bay today admitted killing a US soldier in Afghanistan.

Omar Khadr - a Canadian citizen - was 15 when he threw a grenade at the soldier during a gun battle between US forces and insurgents in 2002. Today the 24-year-old, who has been held since he was 15, pleaded guilty to five terrorism charges in a deal to limit his sentence.

Defence lawyers have been trying to work out a deal that would allow Khadr to serve the rest of his sentence in Canada. Khadr's trial has drawn international criticism due to his age at the time of his arrest. His trial is the first Guantanamo proceeding under President Barack Obama's administration.
