10 minutes with Jennifer Saunders

The comedian, 55, on getting tattooed with Dawn French and Wikipedia
Dipal Acharya11 October 2013

What would you eat for your last supper?

A roast chicken with all the trimmings. I would pull it apart and eat every tiny piece of flesh.

What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?

‘You are not fat.’ I constantly believed that I had a problem with my weight. I should have waited until my fifties.

What last made you laugh?

Harry Hill’s TV Burp — it sometimes makes me incapable.

What’s the funniest thing you’ve read about yourself?

My Wikipedia page. You wonder why someone would think my mother is French or that I used to live with a member of Depeche Mode.

Who do you want to apologise to?

Christine Spruce, a girl at my first grammar school. We used to make fun of her.

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Flog It! I love anything to do with antiques.

Who would play you in the film of your life?

Not Kate Winslet. I’d quite like it to be someone like Mel Giedroyc from The Great British Bake Off.

What did you buy with your first pay cheque?

A black Alfa Romeo Spider. A friend of a friend was selling it for under two grand and I just had to have it.

What’s the worst thing about your job?

Public appearances. I’m not very good on the red carpet.

Biggest fashion mistake?

A bad combo of terrible skinny jeans and pixie boots that I used to wear in the 1980s.

What’s your mantra for life?

It’s my father’s ‘You can be serious but never take yourself seriously’.

Do you have any tattoos?

I have two black stars on my ankle and Dawn [French] has a matching tattoo on her wrist; they represent the end of our act. We thought we’d have something bigger but got frightened once we got into the tattoo parlour.

What can you not live without?

I can live without most things but I find a glass of rosé just oils the wheels a bit.

What’s your desert island boxset?

The Alien collection. I love a bit of sci-fi.

Tell me a secret…

I’ve never had Botox. But I like people to imagine I have.

Jennifer Saunders’ memoir, Bonkers: My Life in Laughs, is out now (Viking, £20). She will be talking at the Cambridge Corn Exchange on 15 October at 7.30pm (toppingbooks.co.uk)
