10 minutes with Rebecca Front

The 49-year-old actress on crying, The West Wing and spending too much time on Twitter
Hannah Nathanson7 June 2013

What’s the funniest thing you’ve read about yourself?

When I first joined The Thick of It one critic suggested that I had made myself chubbier than Peter Capaldi in order that Malcolm Tucker appeared more lithe and powerful than Nicola Murray. I don’t put on or lose weight for roles — I’m not Robert De Niro.

What advice would you give to your 18-year-old self?

Just go with it and relax a bit more.

What last made you cry?

I cry pretty much every night during the news, but I try to hide it. My husband’s quite emotional as well; we’re constantly getting emotional, which amuses our children.

Is there a book that changed the way you thought about things?

I love The Wind in the Willows because lots of personalities, particularly men’s, can be seen through its characters. To say, ‘He’s a Toad with Ratty overtones,’ is a good way of looking at men.

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Twitter. I spend far too much time on it. I’ve tried to quit, but it’s never lasted longer than a couple of days.

What has been your greatest mistake?

It’s probably to come — I can’t get away with it for ever.

Who would play you in the film of your life?

Emily Blunt because she’s very talented, funny and completely gorgeous. Not that I’m completely gorgeous, but I would be if she played me.

What’s your desert island box set?

The West Wing. I’ve watched it over and over again, so I’d happily sit through it another few times.

Do you have any superstitions?

The other day I was sold lucky heather in Covent Garden for an exorbitant amount of money. I couldn’t bring myself to throw it away, so I gave it to a homeless person along with some money for a cup of tea.

Ideal summer’s day in London?

A walk around the Rose Gardens in Regent’s Park, lunch on the river, a matinée and a stroll across Waterloo Bridge.

When have you felt most sexy?

Nobody would want to read my answer to that, least of all my children.

Best thing about a British summertime?

It leaves you wanting more.

Playhouse Presents… Psychobitches is on Thursdays at 9pm on Sky Arts 1
