The lowdown: For a trendy haircut London’s hipsters head to Blue Tit.

This lovely independent salon has branched out since starting life in Dalston in 2011, now boasting a roster of unisex outposts across some of the capital’s coolest areas including Brockley and Peckham.

The latest opening on Brixton’s Coldharbour Road has forged its own identity separate from its sister sites. Inside you’ll find a design-friendly space made up of exposed concrete beams, industrial furniture, strip lighting and geometric tiled floors alongside the odd indoor plant dotted here and there.

My chatty and friendly colourist Harriet efficiently talked me through the different options for my hair, giving me tips and advice on how best to care for blonde hair (the answer it seems, lies in keeping it maintained regularly and investing in a quality toner and conditioning treatment).

More adventurous patrons book themselves in with Harriet for pink and blue tie-dye colours, pastel rinses and rainbow flamboyage looks. I, however, stuck to a relatively tame cut and half-head of highlights.

With a clean and organised kit ready to go, Harriet has a lot of experience under her belt and applied my colour quickly and methodically. The finished colour was dried to reveal a fresh, natural and glossy blonde for the summer.

It’s worth noting that the salon uses Olapex products, which don’t come cheap, but are more natural than most and feel amazing to the touch post-blow dry.

I was then introduced to hairdresser Tom, who has been part of the Blue Tit family for four years, and was skilled at cutting and styling my, frankly, unmanageable locks into a short and flattering style while chatting away about his favourite South London hotspots.

Wine, beer, fresh juices and hot drinks on tap were served on tap while the salon’s resident french bull dog snoozed happily at my feet.

Go here if you’re looking for a salon with a vibe of no-frills, cool functionality that still retains an excellent service and luxury finish that you would expect from a brand with such an ardent following.

Cost: A half head of highlights is £80 with cuts from £57. See the full menu of services here.
