Grimes and her boyfriend Elon Musk want to call their newborn son X Æ A-12 Musk, but California law might prevent it.

This is because the name features things outside the alphabet, a family attorney told People.

"In California, you can only use the '26 characters' of the English language in your baby name," David Glass said.

"Thus, you can't have numbers, Roman numerals, accents, umlauts or other symbols or emojis. Although an apostrophe, for a name like 'O'Connor,' is acceptable.

"They have an opportunity to appeal the rejection of the birth certificate application but it's unlikely that it will be granted because, again, California...has been struggling with using symbols."

He added: "I don't think you can say it's illegal — it just won't be accepted."

Elon Musk announced on Tuesday that the couple had welcomed a baby boy, with the SpaceX CEO sharing a picture of himself holding his newborn son.

And after a fan tweeted at Musk “we need the name we literally need it”, Musk shared that the baby was “X Æ A-12 Musk.”

Grimes - whose real name is Claire Elise Boucher - broke down the full meaning in a tweet for confused fans.

"X, the unknown variable," she wrote, "Æ, my elven spelling of Ai (love &/or Artificial intelligence).

"A-12 = precursor to SR-17 (our favorite aircraft). No weapons, no defenses, just speed. Great in battle, but non-violent."

She added that the "A" in the name, as some fans previously predicted, also stands for "Archangel" — which she said is her "favorite song."

As 2020 is the Chinese year of the rat, "12" is the sign's number.

Grimes first revealed her pregnancy in January, confirming the father was Elon Musk in an interview with Rolling Stone.

The 32-year-old singer has been dating the Tesla founder for two years.
