On Monday night, chic New Yorkers gathered at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center in their black-tie finery to pay homage to the Glamour Women of the Year.

It was an emotionally-charged evening where climate change activists, A-listers and immigration reformers all spoke up about their work.

As Tegan and Sara played, soccer star Megan Rapinoe snapped photos with fans lining up to meet her at her front row seat. She was wearing a purple velvet dress that was almost the same shade as her iconic hair.

Dawson’s Creek actress Busy Philipps hosted the evening. In her opening monologue, Philipps - who has amassed more than two million Instagram followers for her comedy - joked to the crowd of mostly women that, “Change sucks because it’s uncomfortable for some - but you know who’s really used to being f***ing uncomfortable? Women.”

She also spoke about Charlize Theron, who received an award at the end of the evening, saying, "Obviously your movie about Roger Ailes had to be called Bombshell because you already made Monster.”

American soccer player Megan Rapinoe was honored and spoke about Colin Kaepernick’s influence on her activism during her acceptance speech. Rapinoe called him “a person filled with conviction unafraid of the consequence[s] because he knew it wasn’t really about doing what was safe it was about doing what was necessary.”

“I know in my heart of hearts and in my bones that I can do more and we can do more - and I know that because we just have to - we must, it’s imperative that we do more,” Rapinoe announced.

Margaret Atwood was introduced by the Handmaid's Tale star Samira Wiley. Atwood announced she was wearing fake lashes for the first time for the event.

Although climate activist Greta Thunberg was not present to accept her award, Jane Fonda accepted on her behalf.

“I had been feeling anxious and depressed because I knew I wasn’t doing enough in the face of the catastrophe that is looming,” Fonda said, explaining how Thunberg inspired her to protest climate change in Washington, D.C. where she now lives.

Claws actress Niecy Nash introduced her friend Ava DuVernay. “I just love you in a real not Hollywood way,” Ava said about Nash, who she called the most glamorous woman she knows.

Theron was the final award winner of the evening. She teared up while discussing raising her two daughters and how her mother influenced her activism.

“What can be said about Charlize Theron? A person whose Helen of Troy-esque ship launching face is absolutely the least remarkable thing about her,” Kate McKinnon said to introduce her Bombshell co-star.
