Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City might be one of the most stylish characters in television history, but one of her more unusual fashion choices has confused fans for a while.

But now SJP has spoken. Hailed “the mystery of the mismatched Loubs” by SATC fan account @everyoutfitonsatc, Sarah Jessica Parker chimed in the comments to explain the decision behind an unexpected footwear choice in season three.

In the television still posted by the fan account, the caption read, “Did Carrie buy these mismatched sandals straight off the rack? Or did she purchase two separate pairs and mix them together herself? Are they a metaphor for her inability to choose between Aidan and Big? Unfortunately, we have no answers.”

The caption went on to claim this was “one of [Carrie’s] most compelling footwear moments on the series." Despite the fact that SJP wasn’t tagged in the post or caption, it caught her attention and she gave her “official answer” in the comments.

Parker explained that she and “the great and legendary” costume designer Patricia Field came up with the idea together.

She said, “We had 2 pairs of what I believe are @louboutinworld scrappy sandals. Pat and I chose to do 1 of each. Perhaps because both were so delicious in color and seemed in harmony with the dress but also because we simply loved doing 1 of each. Sending my best. And hope this is a satisfactory answer. Xxx”

The fan account reposted Parker’s image, calling her the “shoe God” and proclaiming that the mystery had been solved.

In January, SJP revisited her iconic character for an ad for Matt Damon’s charity Water.org. The nostalgia hit hard as Parker recreated the show’s famous opening, updating it for 2019 as she floated down the street in a grey tulle ballet skirt before being splashed by a bus bearing Water.org’s charity campaign banner.

Parker said of reviving the character, “It’s been a while. It was really fun. Slightly peculiar in the best possible way. It was especially meaningful because the purpose was to amplify this initiative.”

It now seems unlikely that we’ll ever see another feature length instalment of Sex and the City.

Although a third film was initially planned, SJP revealed that negotiations with actress Kim Cattrall had broken down - who plays one of SATC’s main characters Samantha.

SJP said on the Origins podcast, “We negotiated in good faith. I emailed [Kim Cattrall], I tried to reach out to her and say, like, ‘We want you [to be] part of this. You’re an integral part, of course you are. I hope when you read this script you’ll see the beauty, the joy, the heartbreak in it.’

“I can’t force her to see it, but we did negotiate through the process and ultimately the studio said, ‘We can’t meet those asks of hers.’ So then it’s over, but that’s not a character assassination, that’s just the way business works,” she said.

Although a third film seems unlikely any time soon, Parker explained that they could potentially “choose to revisit it at another time and reimagine that story” in an interview with Vulture.

While she revealed her fellow co-stars Cynthia Nixon and Kristen Davis had “shared our disappointment that we’re not making [Sex and the City 3]”, she revealed that no concrete plans were set in place.

Water.org seeks to provide safe water and sanitation to families around the world. More can be learned about the charity and a donation can be made here.
