What to do

Visit the royal horse stables by parliament (below), probably the prettiest you’ll find. I often sneak over at lunchtime — the smell of horses is a nice antidote to fashion. Stroll in Christiania, the legendary freetown (above) north of the city. The fact that we make space for this social experiment — a hippie commune, creative and full of contrast — says a lot about Denmark.

Where to shop

Head to Jérôme Vintage for retro finds ranging from Eighties glitter bags to gowns by Christian Dior. the apartment (below) is full of to-die-for interior finds. My friends Mette and Rolf are the founders of lifestyle brand hay. They have a knack for creating everyday objects that make life so much more stylish. For jewellery, treat yourself to a private session with SOPHIE BILLE BRAHE, who takes bespoke orders on her amazing creations; her studio is also the epitome of Copenhagen chic.

What to see

The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (below) is one of my favourites. The architecture blends in beautifully with the coastline north of Copenhagen, and the art is in a league of its own. I love watching the changing of the guards at Amalienborg Palace— people sometimes forget we have a royal family. Although Thorvaldsens Museum is huge, I always come away feeling re-energised. For a master class in the Scandinavian aesthetic, visit the House of Finn Juhl, home of the late architect. He had immaculate taste, in a very Danish down-to-earth way.

Where to stay

Hotel Sanders (above) is the newest boutique hotel by former ballet dancer Alexander Kølpin. Elsewhere, the hotel D’Angleterre, established in 1755, is the epitome of five- star luxury. Located just a skip from the Nyhavn canal, it is also home to my favourite spa. With only one room, Central Hotel & Café is a little gem, situated on one of the cutest streets in town, and squeezed between posh Frederiksberg and hipster Vesterbro.

Where to eat

Fashion’s latest crush is Apollo Bar at Kunsthal Charlottenborg Gallery. La Banchina (above) by the sea is where the young and beautiful eat, while geranium offers perfect, if pricey, Nordic dining. For a traditional take on ‘smørrebrød’ (open sandwich), SLOTSKAELDEREN HOS GITTE KIK is a total institution.

Where to drink

The interior has been the same since forever at ANDY’S BAR; people still smoke inside and any attempt at pretentiousness falls flat. Right by the harbour where touristy Nyhavn ends, DEN VANDRETTE is the perfect place for after-work drinks. vinhanen is the closest thing we have to a Parisian wine bar. It’s super-casual but has a great wine list.
