High street: asos, acne and whistles do the perfect simple pieces
Karen Dacre6 January 2015

1. The coat

In the bleak midwinter it’s perfectly acceptable to buy a coat at full price — just be sure you opt for one that won’t date. A wool and cashmere blend such as this three-button style from Acne is the ultimate no-regrets purchase, namely because you’ll be wearing it for years to come. To find more January-friendly alternatives, dodge the sale rails and seek out the transitional collections of your favourite high-street brands. COS is brilliant for this. (£800, acnestudios.com)

2. The stripe

Move your stripe obsession to a new level this year with a Breton top that has formal appeal. This turtle-neck style from new shopping site Finery, which launches next month, is a perfect example. Of course, if you can’t wait until then Petit Bateau and Sandro have fitting alternatives. For the most up-to-date way to wear, team with a lace-trimmed skirt. (finerylondon.com)

3. The shirt

The Fall may be a thing of the past but DCI Stella Gibson will live on in our wardrobes this year — and forever more. After all, what could be more useful for the office than a no- nonsense shirt that screams with sensual appeal? While a classic shirt like this one is certain to set you back a good whack, there are a host of more affordable options on offer, including at ASOS. Wear yours with tailored trousers in the office and with jeans and loafers on off-duty days. (£45, asos.com)

4. The crop

Calf-grazing tailoring will continue to thrive in 2015. Avoid frumpy, full-length trousers and instead opt for slouch-fit styles. This pair by Studio Nicholson, designed using a menswear tailoring model, is great for those who favour a flat shoe in the workplace. Team with dark patent skater shoes and an oversized clutch in a punchy shade. (£245, studionicholson.com)

5. The suit

The two-piece is set for a major comeback this year, particularly where office wear is concerned. But this is no stuffy, shoulder-padded moment in style. Cut loose and from lightweight fabrics, the skirt suit for 2015 should be a thoroughly relaxed affair. This raw-edge silk style from Whistles’ resort collection epitomises this new year in style. (£320, whistles.com)
